My father was born in 1905 and he went to work in the City Mine when he was 14. After the mine closed, he decided to find another line of work because, he said, he could think of better ways to die. He embarked upon a series of occupations until he finally gave up on being able to support his family in the mountains. At that point, he accepted a job as an electrician at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA. He retired from the shipyard in 1979 at the age of 74. He enjoyed 8 years of retirement before passing in 1987.
